Grass Roots
Who doesn't love 1990s insert sets?
With so many manufacturers vying for collector dollars, competition was fierce and innovation pushed the limits of what a piece of cardboard could be. The decade was the "Space Race" of the trading card world, and gave us sets and inserts featuring (among others) holograms, chromium technology, acetate and laser-cuts. Amid all of these "futuristic" creations, one manufacture sent us back to earth.
1996 Leaf Football was a small, uninspired set that relied mostly upon its photography. The information on the cards were minimal and the design was even more simplistic. But randomly inserted into the shiny, purple and fuschia (?) packs was "Grass Roots"- an insert set that wasn't your run-of-the-mill chase cards.
Celebrating some of the most explosive players coming out of the backfield, imposed over a football field, these unique cards feature green felt on the front, mimicking the turf or grass found on the playing fields.
Flip the card over, and it's all gloss. And like many of the other insert sets from this era (and especially Donruss products), the cards are serial numbered to /5000.
